Belarusian class for one pupil to be organized in Hrodna
A special educational programme will be created for a first-former Sveta Astrouskya in school #32 and her parents will have to stand trial for an “unauthorized”
Professor Ales Astrouski has not managed to find parents willing to see
their children studying in a Belarusian-language class during a week of
agitation at parents’ meetings. The administration of school #32 has
suggested a compromise: the majority of subjects will be taught to his
daughter in Belarusian. She will attend classes of drawing, eurhythmics
and physical education together with other children. Sveta will study
like this for the next 4 years.
The loyal attitude of local
officials does not sabe the parents from administrative responsibility
for an unauthorized picket in support of a Belarusian class the
Astroukis organized near the City Executive Committee on September 2.
Ales
Astrouski will stand trial for organization of an unauthorized action.
His wife Aksana and a journalist Uladzimir Hilmanovich are accused of
participation in “an illegal picket”.
Ales Astrouski says that
he will organize agitation for parents for the next academic year. If
nobody lieks his ideas, his second child Yanka will also have to study
according to an individual programme. He will go to school next autumn.

A similar class was closed in Zhodzina last year. It was explained by
