Lukashenka and US representative spoke about human rights and Ukraine

On February 27, Minsk hosted a meeting of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Eric Rubin. As BELTA reports, they spoke about bilateral Belarusian-American relations, including the "problematic" issues. But details were not disclosed. We only know that Lukashenka and Rubin talked about the situation 'in the European region'. It was noted that in recent years relations between Belarus and the United States experienced a 'positive trend'.

The US Embassy in Minsk provided more information about the meeting. It is reported that Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Eric Rubin spoke about 'human rights and democratization, the state of the Belarusian economy, as well as regional security issues, including the situation in Ukraine'.The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State stressed 'the commitment of the United States to the sovereignty and independence of all states'.

Lukashenka and Rubin discussed the possibility of expanding cooperation with Belarus 'on matters of mutual interest'. In this case, the US envoy stressed Washington's long-standing concern about the state of human rights and democracy in Belarus. United States is waiting for 'concrete steps' from the official Minsk 'to improve the situation in these areas' including on the eve of the presidential elections to be held in our country this year.

As can be seen, officials at the meeting talked about Belarusian political prisoners.
