Chernobyl-style disaster impossible at Japanese NPP

There has been no explosion in the reactor of Fukushima 1 damaged by the earthquake and the radiation leak is weak. Yukio Edano, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary, has claimed it today. The NPP’s operator - Tokyo Electric Power Company – has confirmed that the building of the reactor has not been damaged by the disaster.

However, the situation is still dangerous despite the fact that the Japanese government has urged citizens to be calm. The outer wall and the roof of the NPP’s power unit have been destroyed as a result of a hydrogen explosion. The explosion resulted in a white smoke emission, four employees were injured. The radiation level registered near the reactor corresponded to a year radiation dose a person could get according to the existing limits.

No Chernobyl-style disaster is possible at the Japanese NPP “because there is no graphite and there is nothing to burn”, claimed Evgeni Velihov, President of the Kurchatov Institute. He noted that according to the information he had received, “Japanese reactors using water as the coolant are installed at Fukushima 1”, reports IATR-TASS.
