EU's Lawrence Meredith: Belarus has huge potential for digital sector
The European Commission sees a huge potential in Belarus for its digital sector, Director at European Commission's Directorate General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DGNEAR) Lawrence Meredith said in an interview with the Belarusian TV channel ONT.
On 21-22 June, he will arrive in Minsk to accompany EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel. In Minsk, the EU high-ranking officials will attend the informal ministerial Eastern Partnership dialogue meeting.
According to Meredith, Belarus plays an important role in the Eastern Patnership.
"We see a huge potential in Belarus for the digital sector. Belarus has proposed to prioritize it in the Eastern Partnership. We have worked hard in this direction. Hahn and Gabriel will come to discuss further on this," the official explained.
Meredith has noted the warming of relations between Minsk and Brussels. "I would like Europeans to come to Belarus. The most important step is a new visa policy to allow business people and tourists to visit Belarus. We share a common goal, that is to improve relations between Belarus and the European Union. I believe we will very soon be able to finalize the so called agreement on the cooperation priorities. It will be a first agreement, and I hope it will help us improve our work," Meredith stated optimistically.
