Former interior minister Yury Zaharanka went missing 15 years ago
The former minister was abducted by a group of unknown men in Minsk on May 7, 1999.
He was Minister of Internal Affairs of Belarus in 1994-1995. He criticized Alyaksandr Lukashenka, was creating an association of officers in the power structures and was always in the forefront at street actions. According to unofficial reports, opposition leader Yury Zaharanka, 47, was killed by ‘the death squadron’.
Zaharanka’s family received political asylum in Germany in 2000. International human rights associations have demanded that the Belarusian authorities investigated the politician’s disappearance many times.
