New explosion at Japanese NPP

One more explosion at the Japanese NPP Fukushima 1 has occurred in the third power unit. Representative of the Japanese government Yukio Edano has claimed that the reactor has not been damaged by the explosion and that there is no threat of a radiation level increase.

The first explosion at Fukushima 1 occurred on Saturday because the NPP’s cooling system had been damaged by March 11 earthquake. The roof of the first power unit was destroyed.

Nuclear power safety experts say that the Chernobyl scenario is unlikely to repeat because Japanese NPPs were built according to much higher standards.

All NPPs have stopped working in Japan and the authorities have announced that energy consumption restrictions will be introduced all over the country, informs the BBC.
