State treason charges for Catholic priest
Belarus state security service KGB confirms that Catholic priest Uladzislau Lazar is being held in KGB custody.
Interfax.by news agency reports the priest is charged with participation in a crime.
The priest allegedly passed cash and material assets to the man who is charged with spying against Belarus for a foreign intelligence.
KGB has reportedly promised Vatican's envoy in Minsk Claudio Gugerotti a personal meeting with Priest Lazar. The Belarus authorities said Lazar's case would not affect Belarus'relations with the Roman Catholic Church.
In late July Aliaksandr Lukashenka said a Belarus security service officer had been detained for working for foreign governments. According to the Belarus leader, the spy maintained contacts with his agents via a Catholic priest in Belarus.
