All swine to be liquidated in 31 villages near Mahileu
These villages are located within the 5-kilometers zone from the farmsteads with over 60 thousand pigs in total.
The news regarding swine liquidation in Mahileu district caught the villagers unawares. No one gathered the people together in order to calm them down and explain anything - the local authorities only place the liquidation ads in crowded places and threw the leaflets into the people's mailboxes.
Meanwhile, only in the village of Sumarokava there are no less than 500 swine living at private farmsteads. Some people breed the animals specially to sell meat.
Local entrepreneur Katsiaryna Muzykantava says they were ordered to kill all private pigs while the number of pigs at the local swine farm is only growing. The entrepreneur notes that there are rumours pork will get twice more expensive at the "Minsk" market in Mahileu since September 1.
Mrs. Muzykantava adds that Sumarokava is located 6,5 kilometers away from the nearest swine farm. According to the vets, the 5-kilometers quarantine zone covers only several farmsteads. However, in order not to discriminate anyone, it was decided to kill all pigs in the village.
