Belarusian oppositionist imprisoned in Poland
Syarhei Panamarou, 62 is a Belarusian political refugee has been jailed for a month and a half. He is facing 10 years of imprisonment.
He was arrested for 2 months on suspicion of arson of two summer houses near Jadvabna, Belsat reports. Some local inhabitant owed him money. One of the houses belonged to a Belarusian citizen. The other house, partly destroyed, belonged to a Pole.
Panamarou will stay in jail until December 13. The collection of evidence should be over by the end of November.
Syarhei Panamarou used to live in Kletsk. He was accused of slandering officials including the head of the City Executive Committee in 2010. The reason for the charges were articles in the newsletter BoikiKletsk edited and published by Panamarou. Panamarou got the status of a political refugee, a passport and a temporary residence permit in Poland in July 2011. If the Belarusian oppositionist is returned guilty, his residence permit may be annulled, the prosecutor said.
