Two presidential candidates debated on Belarus-1 on October 3 – Tatstsyana Karatkevich and Mikalai Ulahovich. Syarhei Haidukevich sent his son and head of the election team Aleh Haidukevich to the debates.

Karatkevich started speaking first. She greeted everyone in Belarusian and continued speaking Russian. “The government is still in the 90s,” she claimed. Mikalai Ulahovich retorted: “I would not be so harsh.” Haidukevich junior spoke about his candidate less than he criticized Karatkevich. “She represents the opposition that has been destroying Belarus for 20 years,” Aleh Haidukevich told the people.

Then the candidates started asking questions to one another and answered the presenter’s questions. It turned out that all the three participants of the debates were for the multi-vector policy, preservation of the national culture and structural reforms. Describing Karatkevich, Haidukevich and Ulahovich’s words without going into detail, we can say that they are ‘against all the bad and for all the good’.

However, the candidates did express some emotions. Tatstsyana Karatkevich asked Haidukevich junior why Haidukevich senior had not come. She suspected him of disrespect. Haidukevich junior took his revenge a few minutes later saying that ‘Karatkevich represent the opposition that wants a Maidan’. The politician was shaking his fist and almost started shouting. It looked rather epic.

Mikalai Ulahovich was having the hardest time. He was using his air time only with the presenter’s help and even confessed that he liked both his opponents. “I am standing between you two like a patriarch,” Ulahovich told Haidukevich and Karatkevich.

The presenter’s most interesting question “Where will you get money for reforms?” was left unanswered.

The participants of the rare Belarusian political show ended their speeches differently. Karatkevich urged people to vote for her, Ulahovich asked Minskers to come to the election and Haidukevich junior shouted out ‘Long live, Belarus!’
