Lithuanian Defense Ministry comments on possible Russian military base in Belarus

The Ministry of Defence of Lithuania spoke about the Russian military base in Belarus. Vilnius officials believe that its appearance would worsen relations with Lithuania, damage the normalization of relations of Minsk with NATO and the European Union.

"There is no doubt that the emergence of a new Russian military base on the territory of Belarus is fraught with tensions in the region and the negative impact on the Lithuanian-Belarusian relations. It will also prevent the movement of Belarus to normalize relations with the EU and NATO,"  Radio Liberty quotes the words of the Lithuanian Minister of Defence Juozas Olekas.

Lithuanian Defense Minister commented on the instruction of the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Defense Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation to hold talks with Belarus on the establishment of the Air Force base (this happened after the meeting in Sochi of Putin and Lukashenko).

Olekas also drew attention to the fact that the official Minsk has not yet announced its position on this issue.
