Local election: Registration of candidates to begin tomorrow
The registration of candidates for the seats on local councils will last through February 20.
As of February 9, almost 17000 candidates for local counciles were nomionated. The number includes over 8000 acting members of local councils. The candidates were nominated through signatures, by working collectives or political parties.
Will there be constituencies without competing candidates? Euroradio posed this question to Central Election Commission chairwoman Lidziya Yarmoshyna who reckons that elections without contenders are possible only in some rural areas where there is a problem to staff local councils. She also says this will not affect the turnout, because villagers traditionally do not skip the polls.
Lidziya Yarmoshyna: "As far as Minsk is concerned, even one week the nomination stage was over, there were consituencies with five candidates competing for one seat. However, there are several no-alternative constituenciesm, but I think the situation will change at the final stages. We will be able to confirm the data on Wednesday morning."
The electoral campaigning will kick off on the daye of candidate's registration and will last through March 22. The Local Election Day is set for March 23.
