Petro Poroshenko and EU officials headed by Ashton arrive in Minsk
They are expected to conduct a bilateral meeting at the Ukrainian embassy and the Ukrainian President will meet Alyaksandr Lukashenka afterwards.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has arrived in Minsk to take part in the Customs Union – Ukraine – European Union summit, BelaPAN reports. He is the first summit participant to have arrived in the Belarusian capital. Ukrainian Ambassador to Belarus Mikhail Yezhel and Belarusian vice PM Mikhail Rusy met him at the national airport.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and European Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht arrived later. They are supposed to head for the Ukrainian Embassy in Minsk for bilateral negotiations between Ashton and Poroshenko.
Petro Poroshenko is planning to meet Alyaksandr Lukashenka after the negotiations.
It is not clear whether Petro Poroshenko is going to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin who will arrive in Minsk at about 1.20 p.m.
The Ukrainian President is going to make peace and ‘to urge to take away militants from Ukraine’, he said on August 21. “I am sure that it is possible,” he said.
