Ales Mikhalevich under international retrieval
They are looking for the Belarusian ex-presidential candidate through Interpol.
Ales Mikhalevich has told BelaPAN news agency that he received an official notification from the Prague public prosecutor's office four days ago. The politician was informed that the Public Prosecution of Belarus had filed a request for his extradition and that he had been announced a subject of international retrieval.
The Prague public prosecutor's office has started an official procedure in order to decide upon Mikhalevich's extradition to Belarus. This procedure may last for several months, as the public prosecutor's office needs to study all the circumstances of the case. However, the politician is convinced he will not be extradited because he has obtained political refuge.
Let us remind you, Mikhalevich has the status of an accused in the December 19 mass disturbances criminal case in Belarus. He was released on recognizance from the KGB pre-trial detention center. The ex-candidate claimed he was tortured and released only after he had given consent to work as a KGB agent, at freedom.
Mikhalevich secretly escaped from the country and obtained political refuge in the Czech Republic in March.
