In Belarus, 32 prisoners convicted on political grounds have been released: 20 women and 12 men. The latest "pardon" by Lukashenka coincides with Belarus's Independence Day, celebrated on July 3.

According to human rights groups, 28 of those "pardoned" held the status of political prisoners. Belarusian state media report that all those released had been convicted of "crimes of an extremist nature," adding, "They all petitioned for a pardon, admitting their guilt and expressing remorse."

The names of those released have not been disclosed.
