Alyaksandr Lukashenka claims he can release organizers of Square
The Belarusian leader made the statement during his speech in Eurasian National University in Astana.
Interfax.by informs that, according to him, the instigators who started the mass disorders have been subjected to responsibility according to the law. Lukashenka says that all the organizers of the Square have already been released “except for the two who were in the vanguard”. He does not exclude that he may also release the other leaders.
It is not clear whether Lukashenka meant that only the ex-candidates were “the instigators”. Let us note that former presidential candidate Andrei Sannikau was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment in a top security colony. Mikalai Statkevich and Dzmitry Us are still waiting for the court’s decision. It will be announced on May 26. The prosecutor is asking to imprison them for 8 and 7 years respectively.
