European leaders not to go to Ukraine because of Julia Tymoshenko's case
President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso said he would not participate in the events dedicated to the Euro-2012.
This is not the first statement of the kind from the European leaders. European Commissioner on Justice and Human Rights Vivian Reading has stated that she decided not to attend the opening game of the Euro-2012 on June 9 in Kharkiv as a protest against the brutal treatment with Ukraine's former PM Julia Tymoshenko, informs the agency "France Press".
Let us remind you, Julia Tymoshenko was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment for exceeding the official powers when signing a gas contract with Russia.
Previously, German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed that she would boycott the Europe Cup in Ukraine and would go there only in case Tymoshenko was released. Moreover, Spiegel magazine writes that Merkel may recommend members of the German government to boycott the Euro-2012, too.
