European Parliament: Euronest group on Belarus produced no results

of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The Assembly has not managed to adopt a critical declaration on Belarus because the other Euronest partners objected to it.

According to the MEP, the first meeting of the workgroup was organized on November 21. Several opposition politicians were invited there which was the reason why Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Syarhei Martynau refused to attend it. The second meeting of the workgroup is expected to take place in Baku in April, added Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.

In the MEP’s opinion, an independent analysis should be conducted instead of accumulating information about the situation in Belarus.

Saryusz-Wolski: "We analyze a wider geopolitical context with the help of a more detailed analysis of the internal situation in the country.  Belarus is a country situated between Russia that does not recognize its independence de-facto, and the European Union that has no strategy and political will to respond to the Belarusian issue”.
Saryusz-Wolski has added that the Euronest will try sending its observers to the parliamentary election in Belarus although it is unlikely to be allowed to do so.
