Lithuanian Seimas approves construction of NPP at border with Belarus
Despite the opposition's boycott, the majority of MPs voted for construction of the NPP in partnership with the Japanese.
Rivals of the nuclear idea expressed doubts in the economic efficiency of the project and spoke about the ecological danger. However, adherents of the new NPP played their trump card - an opportunity not to depend on the neighbours in terms of power anymore:
"We need to go forward! And decide, whether we choose modern technologies, or import the power from Belarus and stay dependent", ― convinced MP Maria Chigriene.
They mentioned Belarus and the Astravets NPP several times during the discussion. Lithuanian PM Andrius Kubilius stated that the rivals of the Visaginas NPP voted for the nuclear stations projects in Belarus and Kaliningrad.
In the end, the final voting was for the construction of an NPP in Visaginas.
