New U.S. Secretary of State stood for sanctions against Minsk
John Kerry substituted Hillary Clinton at this position.
According to the
information provided by Radio Liberty,
two years ago, in January 2011, The Washington Post published an article
written by John Kerry and independent senator Joe Liberman. They urged the West
to respond to the post-electoral repressions in Belarus with targeted
economic-financial and visa sanctions.
Kerry and Liberman suggested five steps which the U.S. and the EU should take,
including targeted sanctions against the Belarusian officials, responsible for
persecution and human rights violations, sanctions against the
"Belneftehim" concern, and blocking the Belarusian authoritative
projects in the Eastern Partnership. The politician also urged Russia to join
the pressure on the official Minsk.
