Varlamau: I need patience now

Belarusian couturier Sasha Varlamau has been imprisoned since May 20. His sister Ryma Shymchonak has received the first letter from her brother. Ryma managed to send a parcel to Sasha a week ago.

Ryma Shymchonak: “I sent him a parcel. The thing is you can only send three parcels a month. And not more than 30 kilos a month”.

Euroradio: Did they accept your parcel; did they give it to him?

Shymchonak: “They did, but they did not accept the honey because it was in a plastic bucket and you could only use plastic bags. He also sent a letter”.

Euroradio: What does he write?

Shymchonak: “He writes that you should be cleverer to avoid such things. He lives opposite a maternity hospital now. He was born in the maternity hospital in Valadarski Street. Judging by the letter, he is optimistic. The nervous tension has been relaxed. It is sad there. They do not allow sending many books. I wrote to him that I would try to send him the book he liked if he told me which one he needed. But I am not sure I will be able to do it. It is very hot and I do not know how many people are in the cell”.

Euroradio: You said that he wrote that he needed to be cleverer. What did he mean?

Shymchonak: “He thought that… Let me read it out to you. “Everything has turned bad. I thought that art was as important to other people as it was to me. It turned out that it wasn’t”. He writes: “I live opposite the maternity hospital I was born in. I have nothing to read. It is really bad that they do not give books to us. The time drags on, there isn’t much news in the cell. It is hot and the nights are long”.

Euroradio: Did he manage to send you a long letter?

Shymchonak: He didn’t. It was a sheet from a copy book. He wrote on both sides of the first sheet and the rest was empty. He wrote it on June 1. We received the letter on June 3”.

Euroradio: Was it the first letter?

Shymchonak: “Yes, it was. I have also sent him a letter. I hope he receives it today”.

Euroradio: Did he describe his health condition?

Shymchonak:  “He wrote that patience was the most important thing for him. He keeps thinking that he could have been cleverer but he cannot change anything now. I know the people he worked with and how he treated them. He was very trusting and his work was the most important thing for him”.

Euroradio: Did he complain about any problems?

Shymchonak: “He may have some problems. But he is not that kind of person to complain. He says that everything is okay even if he feels really bad”.

Euroradio: Did you try to meet him?

Shymchonak: “They will help me write an application today. I have found out that meetings with him are allowed. I will ask the investigator for a meeting”.

Let us remind you that Sasha Varlamau is accused of appropriating 700 million rubles that had to be paid to the people delegated to the festival “Fashion Mill”. He was arrested and detained on May 20.
