Senator Haydukevich proposes referendum to increase presidential term
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Belarus proposes hold a referendum in Belarus on amendments in the Constition, according to the resolution of the Supreme Council and Central Committee of LDP. The party proposes to organize the referendum in 2018 along with the local elections.
LDP proposes to increase the presindential term in Belarus from 5 to 7 years and the term in representative bodies of all levels - from local councils to the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic - from 4 to 5 years.
Besides, the party proposes to elect members of parliament at all levels through the proportional and majoritarian system.
Aliaksandr Lukashenka was the first to voice the need for Constitutional amendments during his speech on October 7. He, however, would not elaborate what amendments exactly he meant.
