Stricter punishment for drug dealers in Belarus? (video)
The Supreme Court of Belarus puts forwards legislation that envisages tougher punishment for drug dealers in Belarus.
Drug addicts not involved in the drug distribution may be imprisoned for up to 5 years now. Drug sellers (soft rugs) may be imprisoned for 5-8 years. Drug dealers involved in the distribution of hard drugs may be imprisoned for 8-13 years. Drug dealing in an organized group may result in 10-15 years of imprisonment, BELTA reports.
“The terms are rather long, but they cannot stop drug dealers anyway,” deputy head of the Supreme Court Valery Kalinkovich told ONT. “It is time to make the punishment for drug dealing stricter,” he reckons.
For instance, it was suggested to increase the term in prison for producing drugs in a laboratory up to 20 years.
Drug dealing prevention measures should be taken in families, Valery Kalinkovich thinks. It is necessary to use aggressive social advertising against the negative consequences of drug addiction too.
