EU representative visited Belarus and met with MFA officials.
Gunnar Wiegand, the European External Action Service Director for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and OSCE came with a visit to Minsk. On November 19, in Minsk, he held a meeting with the foreign minister of Belarus Uladzimir Makey. They spoke about the current issues and prospects for cooperation between our country and the EU.
On Wednesday, Gunnar Wiegand met Belarusian journalists. Euroradio asked him, if the topic of political prisoners was raised during a meeting with Belarusian authorirtes? That's what the EU representative said:
"I raised this issue in a very concrete way, recalled particular cases. It seems to me that it was not a surprise for Belarusian officials. I think everybody understands that there are steps that must be done so that we could fully realize the potential of the relations between the EU and Belarus. There are some steps that can already be made, but there are important things without which it is impossible to reach the full potential in the relationship."
Full version of the Gunnar Wiegand interview will soon appear on our website. Stay tuned for updates.
