Andrei Aramnov: I am the poorest athlete in the country
Belarus' Olympic champion in weight-lifting Andrei Aramnov has to survive on less than $200 per month, while hammer thrower Vadzim Dzevyatouski gets just $100 from the Ministry of Sports, the European Radio for Belarus has learned. Life is hard for the heros of the Belarusian sport who were deprived of the presidential stipend. Borisov-born weight-lifter Andrei Dzevyatouski has become the latest victim who stopped receiving the president's stipend (Br15mn per month or $700).
He was deprived of the stipend after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. He was detained for the second time, and Armanov refused to make a blood test for alcohol.
Aramnov: I am the best but the poorest athlete in the country. I was deprived of the president's stipen that I was awarded for the victory at the Olympic Games”.
ERB: “Does the Sports Ministry not pay your salary, either?”
Aramnov: “Br400K. I am the strongest yet the poorest athlete in the country”.
Borisov Military Prosecutor's Office (Armanov formally serves at the Interior Troops of the Interior Ministry) is preparing to file his case to court.
“The criminal case was opened under Article 317", says Ihar Sharstnyou from the Belarusian Military Prosecutor's Office. "The case is likely to be investigated for two months, according to the law”.
In 2008, the military prosecutor's office investigated 13 similar case. The maximum punishment under this article is 6 months of arrest. But, most often, soldiers would be deprived of their driving permits for five years and penalized with a Br7 million fine.
Belarus' hammer thrower Vadzim Dzevyatouski and Ivan Tsikhan found themselves in a more difficult situation. The two are suspected with using the doping and were deprived of the president's stipend as well.
“I continue to train with the national team and get a salary of Br250K", tells Vadzim Dzevyatouski about his financial constraints. The stipend was canceled and we are not called for the training of the national team. Dinamo helps a little and we thank them a lot for it".
Vadzim describes the doping story as a mistake and does not accuse anyone.
Vadzim Dzevyatouski: “Perhaps, I feel offended deep down, yet we treat this situation with understanding. Moreover, the state promised that we won, everything would be compensated from the financial point of view. I hope this story about the doping is a mistake that will be corrected”.
