Authorities do not want to liquidate “Polonika”
It became known right before the hearing in Hrodna Province Economic Court. Hrodna Lenin District tax Inspectorate has withdrawn its claim.
An activist of the informal Union of Poles of Belarus Andrzej Pahcobut has informed ERB that about a hundred activists of the organization gathered near the court building. Tax inspectors withdrew their claim without any explanation and refused to comment on it at the hearing. According to Mr. Pachobut, activists of the Polish minority were not the only ones who considered it to be unexpected:
Pachobut: "The fact that the claim was withdrawn at the last moment can be proved by the presence of an anti-crisis manager who was present in the court room. An anti-crisis manager is appointed when a company goes bankrupt and gets liquidated… He was present and looked very surprised about the fact that the situation was presented in another way”.
The tax inspectorate imposed a $40 thousand fine on “Polonika” for having received assistance from “Wspólnota Polska”. The money was spent on organization of Polish language classes and improvement of teachers’ qualification. The company has not paid the fine.
In Pachobut’s opinion, the today’s decision is a tactical rather than a strategic victory. The company may be sued again at any moment.
