Belarus discussed at EP plenary session
One of the topics on the agenda of the plenary session of the European Parliament taking place in Brussels on October 6 and 7 is the abolishment of death penalty. The European Parliament has urged word states to value the right to live and to refuse from the death penalty practice many times. European parliamentarians discussed it on October 6.
Portuguese European deputy Anna Gomes: “Belarus, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Sudan – what do they have in common in the field of respect for basic human rights and liberties? All these states continue using the primitive practice of capital punishment”.
A Slovak European deputy Edward Kukan: “It is a shame Belarus is the only Europeans state still practicing death penalty. We should use all our efforts to change this situation. The European Union should keep discussing the issue of the abolishment of death penalty both during bilateral negotiations and at international forums”.
The European Parliament is going to adopt a resolution dated for the World Day Against the Death Penalty. It is marked on October 10. Belarus may be mentioned as a separate issue there.
