Belarus needs more nuclear power plants - Academy of Sciences head
The nuclear power plant, being constructed in the Astraviec district of the Hrodna region near the border with Lithuania, may not be the last nuclear power station in Belarus, National Academy of Sciences chairman Uladzimir Husakou suggested at a news conference in Minsk on January 25.
"More nuclear power stations will be built, maybe by 2030," he is quoted as saying by interfax.by. The top scholar noted while Belarus experiences energy shortage it should boost the energy sector if the goal is to grow GDP and inprove the living standards of people.
Scholars reckon that the nuclear power plant in Astraviec will trigger the launch of new energy-intensive production lines. For example, a hot dip galvanizing line was recently opened in Lida, having the soon-to-open nuclear power station in mind.
