Belarusian Attorney General demands severe punishment for drunken drivers
The Belarusian Attorney General Ryhor Vasilevich insists on the introduction of a more severe punishment for drunken driving. The General Office of Public Prosecutor informed “Interfax” about it. More than 53 thousand drunken drivers were registered in 2007. 1600 people were detained for repeated drunken driving in 2007. Driving inspectors detained more than one thousand people for repeated drunken driving from January until May 2008.
By the way, drivers can be fined for up to one thousand base amounts for such an infringement according to the Criminal Code. However, judges usually fine drivers for 40-100 base amounts (besides detention or correctional labour). In connection with it, the Attorney General has ordered his subordinates to demand a more severe punishment for drunken drivers.
