Belarusian FM spokesman: Kalinouski a major historical figure

"For Belarus, Kastus Kalinouski is a major historical figure. There can be no doubt about it. There is no need to argue to whom he belongs more. This is a common heritage that unites the people of Belarus, Poland, and Lithuania," said Anatol Hlaz.

Hlaz believes that the erroneous impression of the inaction of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry in the Kalinouski's case was due to the fact that it concentrated its efforts “on specific cases”, and the media were practically not informed about the steps taken. “But this does not mean that nothing is being done,” said Hlaz.

The spokesman recalled a trip to Vilnius by Belarusian experts who were familiar with the study of the remains of the rebels that happened at the end of last year. “We are currently discussing with the Lithuanian side the possibility of working together for more accurate identification of the remains,” says Anatol Hlaz.

Perhaps this means that the exhumation of the Viktar Kalinouski's grave is not out of the question. According to Hlaz, a meeting with the Lithuanian ambassador was held on March 29 at the Foreign Ministry. It was not only about this, but also about the inscriptions in the Belarusian language made on the graves after the reburial.

“We are very interested in achieving historical justice regarding this person and are ready to actively cooperate with our Lithuanian and Polish partners, and with the Belarusian society,” said the spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.
