Belarusian language society refuses to endorse Tell the Truth! campaign
Only two high-profile public figures have refuse to put their signatures for renaming Ulyanauskaya street after famous writer Vasil Bakov. They are Mikalai Charhinets who chairs the official Union of Writers and Aleh Trusau, the chairman of the Belarusian Language Society, Tell the Truth! activists told reporters in Minsk. They said that Charhinets explained that he had already approached the government with the same proposal earlier and was waiting for an answer.
In an interview with Euroradio, Trusau stated that the campaign organizers were not interested in his signature. He explained: "I was approached by a representative of this group who wanted the Belarusian Language Society to help gather signatures for this street. Personally, I was not asked to endorse. Instead, they wanted the Belarusian Language Society to work for this unknown campaign. I told them that I had never worked and would never work for a Russian-language or Russian campaigns. All their postcards were made in Russian and printed in Smolensk... On the whole, I do not quite understand who stands behind these campaigns".
Trusau said he did not object against Vasil Bykov street in Minsk, but stressed it should be a new street.
