Blur’s frontman becomes a classical composer

Damon Elburn, the frontman of Blur, has finished composing an opera titled “Monkey: A Journey to the West”.

The opera’s presentation is scheduled to take place at the International Festival in Manchester in summer of 2007. Damon decided to compose an opera after he heard an old Chinese legend titled “A Journey to the West”. Over four dozens of the Chinese singers and circus acrobats are planned to become part of the show.

Elburn is currently working together with the artist and designer, Jamey Hewlett, who makes costumes for the show. Their previous cooperation experience resulted in a popular virtual duet, Gorillaz. Elburn hopes that his musical piece will help previously uninterested listeners to treat opera in a new way.

The musician also noted that he had had an experience of working with orchestra instruments. When he was 15, Elburn even once participated in a composers’ contest, but failed to become a success.
