Collection of signatures in support of Ivan Tsihan starts in Hrodna

Neighbours of the hammer-thrower disqualified for a positive dope test believe in his innocence. People are signing appeals that will be sent to the National and International Olympic Committees.
Let us remind you that the disciplinary commission of the International Olympic Committee decided that the silver and bronze medal winners of Beijing Olympic hammer-throwing competition Vadzim Dzevyatouski and Ivan Tsihan had to return their awards. Tsihan was disqualified for 2 years and Dzebyatouski – for life. The sportsmen claimed that they were going to appeal the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

The action in support of Ivan Tsihan started in Hrodna (the sportsmen lives in the city) on Wednesday when a new issue of “Evening Hrodna” was out. The newspaper urged to support the sportsman and sign appeals in his support. Nadzeya Zavinouskaya, journalist working for the edition, explains how the idea appeared:

“One of Tsihan’s neighbours works with us. We thought “Let’s do it!” And that was it”.

Ordinary citizens and organizations welcomed the action on that very day. Signatures started appearing in the appeals written by journalists.

Nadzeya Zavinouskaya: “Representatives of organizations have already turned to us. They are officials, but they left their signatures as citizens. Youth Olympic Reserve School and the Centre of Rehabilitation Medicine have turned to us”.

If Hrodna inhabitants persist in their activity, the action will last till the New Year’s Day. By the way, it may become a real surprise for Tsihan as nobody has talked it over with him”.
