Croatia to get first female President

Croatian President Ivo Josipović has admitted his defeat. The ex-Minister for Foreign Affairs and candidate of the leading opposition party Croatian Democratic Union Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović will become the first female President of Croatia. She has left the current President behind by about 1%, BBC reports.

Josipović used to have strong support in Croatia. However, he has been criticized a lot recently because the country’s economy has been in the state of recession for six years.

Grabar-Kitarović has promised to stop the recession. She also wants to make the President’s role more important by changing the Constitution. The President’s post is ceremonial in Croatia now. The government rules the state.
