Darya Zhuk
Belarusian director Darya Zhuk is preparing a dark sci-fi drama-dystopia - "Exactly what it seems". According to Variety, it is "a sci-fi satire on modern authoritarianism". The movie is based on an original story by Tatsyana Zamirouskaya (she will co-write the script). It will be shot in Belarusian, English and Russian.
According to the plot, a young couple seeks political asylum in the United States. However, they suddenly find themselves teleported back to Belarus, where they are threatened with repression. It turns out that this happened with the help of a mysterious quantum technology created by scientists under a dictatorial regime. Young Belarusians must survive by hiding from persecution in order to escape to the free world.
According to Zhuk, her new movie explores themes of toxic nostalgia and the search for identity against the backdrop of a totalitarian regime.
