EU awaits ‘steps’ from Lukashenka
The European diplomats told the Eurobserver daily that Europe was waiting for the steps from the Belarus President to implement 12 conditions, named as “the steps towards democracy” and proposed by the European Union to the leadership of Belarus in November 2006.
The envoys noted that the EU travel ban for the top Belarus officials would not be lifted until the conditions were met. The European Union is also trying to restore the representative office of the European Commission in Minsk and to simplify assistance delivery to the Belarusian opposition.
At the same time, some politicians say it is not efficient to negotiate with the Belarus president. In their views, Aliaksandr Lukashenka is not a reliable partner for talks. When the changes take place in Belarus, his career will be over, and he is likely to end up in the International Court in the Hague, reports Telegraf.
