Hrodna University liquidates History Faculty
The History Faculty will be united with the Tourism Faculty. Some people say this is an attempt to get rid of politically unreliable historians.
The online newspaper Solidarity notes that there have been rumours about this for the last two months, since politically unreliable historian Vyachaslau Shved was fired. Also, one of the authors of the "Learning Hrodna" book Andrei Charnyakevich was fired back in autumn 2012.
History Faculty Dean Edmund Yarmusik confirms that the issue of uniting the two faculties is under consideration indeed. However, he sees nothing bad about this. "This is a natural re-organization of the educational process," Yarmusik says.
Probably, the uniting of the faculties will be followed by staff reduction. Thus, the university has an opportunity to finally get rid of those politically unreliable historians who still work there.
