"Human shield" victims didn't know that traffic police planned to visit accident scene
The traffic police planned to visit the site of the accident where officers used private cars with people inside as a human shield in order to stop a drunk overspeeding driver. They planned to visit the site on March 16. The European Radio for Belarus has learned that the victims of the accident were not informed about the planned visit.
Fiodar Huletski, a chief inspector of the Traffic Police Department, told Belapan that they had "planned to clear up all the details of the incident". However, the trip was cancelled because "the driver of the overspeeding car Raman Myantsyuk was admitted to a hospital after his wedding.
Without him, it was impossible to continue with the internal investigation, Huletski said.
The European Radio for Belarus called Vera Stramkouskaya, the lawyer for the car chase victims. It turned out that the traffic police did not notify the victims about the planned trip:
"I received this news from many sources, including the NTV channel. They called asking if we were going there. But we were not officially notified. Moreover, I called the investigator and he said: "We are not planning anything. We don't know which plans the traffic police have. We were not invited"".
A prosecutor's office opened criminal cases against four traffic police inspector on charges of office abuse and also against Raman Mentsyuk "for violating the moving rules".
