Leanid Kulakou fined 6 million rubles for rally against death penalty
The Pershamayski district court of Minsk fined the activist of "European Belarus" Leanid Kulakou 6 million 300 thousand rubles (30 basic units). He was found guilty of taking part in an unsanctioned picket on 10 December 2015, the human rights center "Viasna" reports.
At the trial, Kulakou challenged the judge Yury Harbatouski, since he had already sentenced the activist for unauthorized rallies. However, this petition by Kulakou was dismissed by the court.
During the trial, Kulakou said he did not agree with the accusations, though he did not refuse the participation in the rally. "On December 10 was the International Human Rights Day. By this rally I decided to congratulate our Belarusian human rights activists and to express solidarity with their fight against the death penalty. I do not find elements of crime in my actions, and I am being tried for my dissent and my active position," he said.
