Phillip Gordon met opposition before talks with Belarus authorities
US Deputy Secretary of State for European and Eurasia affairs Phillip Goron today met with the representatives of the Belarusian opposition and civil leaders in Minsk.
The opposition and civil activists told the US official about the social and political situation in the country, focusing on human rights and the press freedom.
The topic of political prisoners was also raised during the meeting. The American official was asked to pay a special attention to the criminal cases against young opposition activist Artsiom Dubski and entrepreneus from Vaukavysk -- Mikalai Autukhovich, Uladzimir Asipenka and Yury Liavonau.
According to United Civic Party leader Anatol Liabedzka, Gordon noted his visit to Minsk should give an answer to the question whether the Belarusian authorities are ready for changes, reports Belapan
