Poland asks NATO to enhance eastern border defence
NATO should reconsider the eastern border defence concept at the Alliance summit in September, Polish Minister of Defence Tomasz Siemoniak told RadioP
“We have never been in such a situation before. It will probably be the most important NATO summit in 15 years. It will be a test for NATO and the summit will demonstrate whether the Alliance has drawn any conclusions from the current European security crisis,” Siemoniak said.
It is necessary to consider the measures aimed at strengthening the eastern border of the Alliance in this situation, he thinks.
It is necessary to develop the existing NATO structures in Poland, Tomasz Siemoniak believes. In particular, he mentioned the International North-East Complex in Szczecin.
The next NATO summit will be held in Wales on September 4-5. NATO member states’ leaders will discuss the future structure and organizational problems taking the current challenges into account. The Ukrainian conflict is expected to be one of the key issues on the agenda. Petro Poroshenko will be invited to the summit by Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
