Prostitutes, beggers cleared from Minsk streets ahead of world championship
The police in Minsk step up preparations for the 2014 World Ice Hockey Championship to be hosted by Belarus capital next May.
Heavy alcohol abusers are forcibly taken to labor treatment centers. Sex workers and beggers are put under surveilance and strict police watch ahead of the tournament, reports Minsk-Naviny. Around 600 boozers were transferred to labour treatment centers in 2011. There were already 900 in 2012 and almost 1500 this year.
Sources in the Minsk police say that a police officer will be personally responsible for literally every meter especially in the city center and around ice arena. Riot police units from other cities in Belarus will be deployed in Minsk to reinforce the capital's police force. They have already been put on training in Minsk in order to familiarize themselves with the routes and areas they will be responsible for in May.
Video surveillance will be put up in all hotels and dormitories where ice hockey fan will be accommodated to ensure theur safety.
