543 people trapped on ice floes in Gulf of Riga
Fishermen are being drifted into the sea, as a massive rescue operation is under way near Latvian capital
A rescue operation is being conducted now, delfi.lv reports. The National Armed Forces are participating in it.
There are 43 people on one ice floe and about 500 – on the other. Most of them are fisherman but there are also women and children caught walking on the ice.
Helicopters and ships are being used in the rescue operation, high waves are causing problems.
