Belarus foreign minister meets Western ambassadors
Uladzimir Makey has discussed Belarus-West relations with envoys from EU member states, Vatican, United States and Switzerland.
Mr Makey revived contacts with European diplomats back in December 2012. On December 17, Belarus foreign policy chief received Gunar Vigand, Director for Countries of Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and Central Asia at the general administration of EU Foreign Relations. On the same day, Mr Makey spoke on the phone with the head of Czech diplomacy, Karel Schwarzenberg.
On January 14-15, 2013, a delegation from the Council of Europe headed by Bjorn Berge, Director of the Private Office of the Secretary General, paid a visit to Minsk. Makey and Berge discussed "possible spheres of cooperation between Belarus and the Council of Europe in 2013."
Political commentator Valer Karbalevich reckons Minsk and Brussels are in talks that could lead to the release of political prisoners in exchange for positive moves from the European Union.
