International Mother Language Day marked today
It was established by UNESCO in 1999 in memory of Bangladesh students who had died protecting their right to study in their mother tongue.
About half of world's languages are facing the threat of obsoletion. UNESCO is urging to think about them today.
As of the last population census, 5 million 58 thousand Belarusians (or 60%) said that the Belarusian language was their mother tongue. However, only half of them speak it.
