MEPs to assess Belarus election
The MEPs will discuss the parliamentary campaign's results and perspectives of development with representatives of six political forces in Belarus.
The meeting will be held on October 11-12, in the framework of the European Parliament working group’s session in the Euronest format. The United Civil Party, the Belarusian Popular Front, "Fair World" , the campaign "Tell the truth!" , the Movement "For Freedom" and the organizing committee of the party "Belarusian Christian Democracy" received invitations to take part in it. Leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka has told this to Euroradio:
"It will be an assessment of the election campaign and the prospects of the situation in Belarus, this is the context. Our task during a visit to Brussels is to make them focus on three points: the release of political prisoners, "Fair elections without Lukashenka" and a positive alternative for Belarus ".
According to Lyabedzka, it is important that the meeting will take place upon the initiative from Brussels. This shows that the EU still has interest to our country. Moreover, on October 15 there will be a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the EU. They will also discuss the "Belarusian issue" - the possibility to expand sanctions against the Belarusian authorities. The evaluation of the parliamentary election which has already been provided by the OSCE observers, PACE members and the one which will be formed upon the results of the working group session on Belarus in the EP, will be considered by the EU Ministers, Lyabedzka thinks.
It was reported before that the Council of Ministers might consider the issue of withdrawal of the “travel banned” status off the Foreign Minister of Belarus Uladzimir Makey.
