Reporters without Borders: Belarus index up but back to appalling level
Our country had more freedom of speech in 2012 in comparison with 2011.
It is said in the annual report of the human rights organization Reporters Without Borders.
Belarus has gone up by 11 positions in the World Press Freedom Index in comparison with 2011 and is in the 157th position (out of 179) now. Our closest "neighbours" on the list are Azerbaijan and Egypt.
Our geographical neighbours are in the following positions: Russia - 148, Ukraine - 126, Latvia - 39, Lithuania - 33 and Poland - 22.
The World Press Freedom Index is an annual ranking of countries based upon the organization's assessment of the countries' press freedom records.
