State Emblem and Flag Day marked in Republic of Belarus on May 8
The holiday was created according to a presidential order in November 1995. It is marked during the second week of May every year.
The current variant of the emblem and flag was introduced after the referendum of May 14, 1995. According to its results, 75.1 % of those who voted approved the flag and emblem proposed by Alyaksandr Lukashenka. The Belarusian state stopped using the white-red-white flag and “Pahonya” after the referendum of 1995.
The current state flag is red-green. The Belarusian red national ornament is displayed on the hoist of the flag in the white background, reminds BelTA. The red colour is considered to be the colour of standards used during the Battle of Grunwald, the colour of the Red Army and partisan brigades. The green colour symbolizes hope and revival, forests and fields, life, welfare and peace.
