USA asks for Europe's support to put more pressure on Belarus
Belarusian authorities' repressions against dissidents will be discussed at the meeting of the Community of Democracies in Vilnius.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Pozner held a speech to journalists in Washington and informed that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was going to participate in the meeting.
Pozner also claimed that there is a "horrible situation" in Belarus. Authorities conduct repressions not only against the opposition but against the civil society and other groups of population. The USA are deeply concerned by this. "We will continue pressure but we cannot do it alone. We need support of our European partners”, — U.S. Assistant Secretary of State said.
The Community of Democracies' meeting will take place in Vilnius from June 28 till July 1. The program of the meeting includes seminars for civil society activists from Belarus, Moldova and countries of North Africa. Community of Democracies was found in 2000 and unites governmental officials and civil society leaders. Its aim is to strengthen democratic values in the whole world, Radio Liberty informs.
