Russia, Ukraine reach gas transit deal
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko agreed in Moscow on Sunday to make everything possible to resume the transit of the Russian gas via Ukraine to European consumers on Monday. The executives of Ukraine's Naftagas and Russia's gas giant Gazprom were ordered by the heads of government to prepare a package of necessary documents by Monday. Yulia Tymoshenko said Europe-bound transit flows would be restored immediately after those documents were signed.
Vladimir Putin promised a 20-percent discount for Ukraine in 2009 on condition that Kiev would also keep transit fees lower for Russia.
It means that in 2009 Ukraine can buy gas from Russia at the European price minus 20 percent, or $360 per 1000 cubic meters.
